How to order Request a quote (form, four steps) or, for dealers, the GATR Skn portal

How it works

  1. Quote. Four steps on the quote form: your details, the boat or surface, material and pattern, how you want it installed. You get a price per square foot and a total for your boat.
  2. Scan. GATR 3D-scans the deck at the shop or on site, or scans the tracings you send in, so every piece fits the hull, the hatches and the hardware.
  3. Design and proof. Pattern, colors, logo and ruler placement in a digital rendering. Nothing is cut until you approve it.
  4. Cut and install. CNC-cut in Thibodaux and installed by the same crew, or shipped as a kit. Three to four weeks from proof approval.

Boat decking questions

What is GATR Skn boat decking?

GATR Skn is custom-cut Marine Mat decking for boats, made and installed by GATR in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Marine Mat is a non-porous, closed-cell marine foam with a fiber-reinforced adhesive back: non-skid wet or dry, cooler underfoot than fiberglass, does not absorb water, and peels off cleanly when you want to replace it. GATR is Louisiana's first certified platinum Marine Mat fabricator and does the scan, the design, the cutting and the install in one shop.

How much does custom boat decking cost?

From $28 per square foot in 6 mm Marine Mat with the Base pattern; $30 per square foot for Signature patterns (fish scales, diamond, topography, teak line, honeycomb) and $40 for Premium, which includes your own design. Thicker sheets add $100 (9 mm), $160 (12 mm) or $540 (21 mm) per sheet; 15 and 18 mm are quoted on request. Logos are $125 each, engraving $60 per sheet, rulers $40 or $75. The quote form gives you a firm number for your boat.

How long does boat decking take?

Three to four weeks from the day you approve the design proof. Scanning the boat takes about an hour at the shop; the design and proof follow within days; cutting and install fill the rest. Rush work is possible by arrangement. Custom orders are not returnable, so check the proof carefully.

Do I have to bring my boat to Thibodaux?

No. Three ways: bring the boat to the shop at 1635 St Patrick St in Thibodaux for scan and install; have the GATR crew come to you, anywhere the job makes sense, with travel quoted on request (if you are near a major airport or can meet us near one, we fly in and out the same day, which has taken us to places like Orlando and Dallas for much less than driving); or trace your deck, send us the tracings, and we scan them, cut the kit and ship it to you with instructions. Most customers outside our area choose the tracing route. Say which you prefer in step four of the quote form.

Can I install Marine Mat decking myself?

Yes. Any customer can order a kit. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, dry-fit every piece, warm the surface and the adhesive with a heat gun or hair dryer, peel a few inches of backing and press from one edge, working the air out as you go. Install above 60°F on a dry day. Curved, stepped or heavily textured surfaces are better done in the shop.

Which thickness should I choose?

6 mm. It is the standard and covers about nine in ten of our jobs: decks, casting platforms, cooler lids and golf carts. Marine Mat also comes in 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 mm. A few customers choose 12 mm for spots where they stand for hours, and fewer choose 21 mm for specific areas such as bolsters and leaning posts, where cushion matters more than profile.

Yes. Logos and names are CNC-cut through the top layer to show the color underneath, or laser-engraved into the surface for fine detail, $125 per logo. A molded fish ruler runs $40 up to 36 in and $75 beyond. Three color layers per sheet let you match a hull or a team color from 40 standard colors. GATR does not design artwork; send a vector file with your quote.

How does Marine Mat hold up to sun, heat and fish blood?

Well, which is why it replaces carpet. Marine Mat is non-porous, so it does not absorb water, fish blood or spills; it rinses clean with a hose and mild soap. It stays cooler than fiberglass in the sun and is non-skid wet. Taken care of, it lasts for years: the decking on our own boat is more than eight years old. When it is worn or you want a new look, the fiber-reinforced backing peels off without scraping, and GATR keeps your scan and cut files on file for the next set.

Is there a warranty on boat decking?

Yes. GATR Skn carries Marine Mat's limited manufacturer warranty: 36 months from purchase against defects in the material, including the material delaminating from itself. Adhesion to the deck and installation are not covered, by Marine Mat or by any decking fabricator. If something goes wrong, call GATR at (985) 387-1400. We keep every customer's scans, cut files and project details, so a warranty claim or a replacement piece is quick.

Is GATR Skn the same as SeaDek?

No. Both are closed-cell foam decking, but they are different materials from different makers. GATR Skn is Marine Mat, cut and installed by GATR as a certified Marine Mat fabricator. In our experience, three things set them apart. Feel: SeaDek's HD material is firmer, closer to a thin rubber shoe lining, and most of our customers tell us they prefer the softer feel of Marine Mat. Replacement: Marine Mat's patented fiber-reinforced backing peels off without the glue left behind, so replacing a deck takes minutes of prep instead of a long day of scraping. Colors: the palettes are similar, but shades differ by brand (Marine Mat's espresso is not SeaDek's mocha), so choose from the Marine Mat chart.

Can you deck a golf cart, running boards or a cooler?

Yes. The same Marine Mat goes on golf-cart floors, truck running boards, dock boxes, ATVs and any flat surface, at the same per-square-foot prices. For GATR cooler lids there are ready-sized pads from $70 on the custom cooler pads page; for other coolers and everything else, use the quote form.

More answers about custom work, warranty and turnaround in the GATR FAQ. Ready-sized pads for GATR coolers are on the custom cooler pads page.
